Happy New Beer
Well, here I am in an Intertubes cafe down on Courtenay Place at 8pm or thereabouts, I’m already getting amphibious, and I have two beers to blame — and myself, since I decided that before I got hopelessly spazonkled, I would start at The Malthouse..
Captain Cook Spruce Beer
Apparently first brewed in 1773 at Dusky Bay, Wigram Brewery is cranking out an unmissable beer. The first taste hits with a mixture of liquorice and wood, floating on a submerged honey base, and on swallowing leaves a pepper-tree aftertaste in the back of the throat. OK, it’s NZD$10.50 at the bar, but still worth your while. If you chug this, you seriously suck.
Dux Deluxe Lager
Second is a Dux Deluxe Lager. This beastie was much more sharp and peppery than I expected, and went well with the “ugly bread” I ordered. Quite a contrast to the Captain Cooker.
I followed that pair with a locally made Tuatara Hefeweizen and preceded it with a more generic Mac’s Gold, so please excuse me if I’m incoherent. I needed to get my impressions down before I got so smashed or distracted I forget ‘em.
Have an excellent New Year, and may all your resolutions be achievable ones.
