Some thoughts on Lost Spires
The Lost Spires is a fairly ambitious mod for Oblivion, in which you join a faction, do a dungeon crawl or two zillion, and all the usual fun stuff.
Being a third party mod, it naturally has a number of rough edges; there are spelling mistakes, some of the artifacts are rather twee, and one quest requires you to refrain from picking up a quest object until the dungeon is cleared. (Sloppy scripting there. Should’ve compensated for that, or at least the object should have been placed on the body of… never mind.)
The download’s 285MB includes nearly 70MB of silent MP3s used to pad out the dialogue; apparently there are plans to add voice acting at a later stage. I certainly look forward to that as having people stare silently at you is a little unnerving.
The spires themselves are an arresting sight – twisted rectangular monoliths of dark stone inscribed with blue symbols. The dungeons beneath are retextured cave and Ayleid meshes, I believe, and are nonetheless striking. In one, I found daedra that were also ‘affected’, making these things even more sinister.
I have not yet finished this mod, which I am running with the official Knights of the Nine and the rather short Shivering Isles, but currently the outlook is favourable. No doubt patches will appear eventually, and I alternately look forward to and dread the arrival of voice acting.
The Lost Spires is worth downloading and trying out, but remember it’s not as polished as the official expansions.
