Audiosurf

After hearing some raving about this game called Audiosurf I went and downloaded the beast via Steam.

Then I had to download the Quest3D viewer package separately, be far from impressed, restart, and finally understand.

Audiosurf is an action puzzler, where your ship flies along a road making colour groups from blocks that are sitting on said road. The data files that generate the road you provide yourself.

They’re audio files.

Your audio files, so if you want to race along with, say, Hooster’s Rotate or chill out with Hellpope Huey’s Magnesium Turban, — or be terrified on his Testicular Torsion — you can. The genre and tempo dictate the relative easiness of your ride.

The demo allows for five plays or so, and that may seem a little short — it does for me. If it had allowed for five unique songs and as many plays as you can eat, they might have had a less reluctant customer from me. (The requirement of restarting Steam and an orphaned shortcut to the demo was none too promising either.)

However, I’m not impressed enough; it’s an action puzzler in 3D that uses music files to generate levels, big deal. If it clearly kept a persistent playlist of music files used from session to session, that would be cool. At USD$9.95, the price is reasonable for a fun toy like this.

Someone has suggested such a system would be neato for a 2D shooter in the Gradius or R-Type mould. I’d have to agree.
